Manila Bulletin: Bea Alonzo in a mature and sexy role
Aug. 09, 2004

Expect the onscreen romance of love tandem Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz to sizzle with more fireworks when their Laurenti Dyogi film entitled “Now That I Have You” opens on Aug. 11.

The two whose loveteam starred in Star Cinema’s “First Romance” have been making raves as a TV couple ever since their first pairing in the ABS-CBN soap opera “Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay.” While their latest drama series “It Might Be You” has become a must-watch-soap for their fans as proven by its favorable TV ratings. And it is all thanks to their love team’s drawing power.

The irony of it all is that, their romance is just limited to television or even the movies because of their age difference – John Lloyd is already a 20-something actor while Bea still has two years to go before becoming an adult. But despite it, televiewers who have followed their love team in their soap operas are still in anticipation of their onscreen romance turning into a real-life love affair.

With regards to the possibility of John Lloyd’s courting her, Bea expressed during their film’s press conference recently that she is very open about it if ever it happens.

“I really don’t know, hindi naman niya kasi sinasabi. Pero ang feeling ko kung darating siya, it will happen at the right time. The Lord has always been blessing me at the right time and hindi niya ako pinapahirapang masyado. I believe in destiny,” she said.

She admitted too that John Lloyd was never her crush but she finds him handsome and a very good actor. Having a crush though on a person doesn’t necessarily mean that he is the person she’ll fall in love with too. According to her, she could love someone who is not her crush.

“Right now, we are more comfortable with each other. I’m getting to know him better. Before it was only about work and we were never close friends. I can say that we are friends pero hindi pa ganung ka-close. Ewan ko kasi I haven’t shared my problems to him. I guess we are just starting to know the deeper side of us,” she shared.

In “Now That I Have You,” Bea Alonzo plays Betsy Rallos who gets attracted to Michael Morellos, John Lloyd’s character, when she chanced upon him in an MRT station. Since then she has always waited for him in that station hoping that she’ll get noticed. When the two finally meet, Michael turned out to be all the man she dislikes – boring and serious. Compared to her outgoing attitude in life and her bubbliness, Michael is her exact opposite which she hates. Betsy too is portrayed here as someone who chase after men.

Playing a 21-year-old, part of Bea’s preparation is losing a lot of “baby fat.”

“This is a mature and sexy role for me. But this is not the definition of sexy which people usually associate with. Sa pagiging sexy ko parang gusto kong ma-open yung mind ng mga tao na sexy here means me exploring myself more in my role. It also means na liberated ang character ko. She is someone who expresses herself more,” commented Bea.

She believes that to play older roles, it would be better for her to be thinner. The transformation of her character in “It Might Be You” also has necessitated her losing weight.

“Until now, if I look back to some of the roles I did, I feel I didn’t give justice to any of them. Like sino ang maniniwala na pinagaagawan ako ng mga lalake eh ang taba ko noon,” she smiled. “I was also pressured to lose weight because kapag mataba ka you limit yourself to certain roles. Baka may magaganda akong roles in the future sayang naman.”

It was a conscious effort for her to lose weight. There are no special diets according to her. She just really try hard not to eat much. Her workout includes a regular bout with the treadmill at home which she bought since gyms were far from their place.

“I wasn’t conscious before of my weight. Kahit ano sinusuot ko. What I was concerned of all the time was my acting which I’m still am. The difference lang now is that I’m conscious of my weight na,” she smiled.

Another moment that their fans are raving to see in “Now That I Have You” is their second movie kiss. Bea never had a boyfriend in real life, so John Lloyd has been her kissing partner onscreen. For Bea, this is part of the career she has chosen and she didn’t mind having someone else other than a boyfriend to give her her first kiss. For John Lloyd, their kissing scene is something he found hard to do.

“Ako ang kinabahan kasi ako ang hahalik. I don’t want the moviegoers to think that I was taking advantage of her,” he remarked.

With regards to whether she has now some special feelings for John Lloyd, Bea replied that there’s nothing yet to spark a real life romance.

“I’m happy working with him. Masaya siyang kasama. I never expected na ganun pala siya in real life. Akala ko boring siyang kasama. Pero kapag kasama mo siya enjoy.”

Things are going well with Bea’s career right now. If things go her way, she will again realize another dream – a role as the Virgin Mary. Playing Virgin Mary or any woman saint is a welcome idea for her since she admitted to have fondness for saints and she loves praying to them.

“Now That I Have You” is written by Jose Javier Reyes and it also stars Nikki Valdez, Kristopher Peralta, Lui Villaruz, Jojit Lorenzo, Noel Colet and Cholo Escaño.
