ARE love teams still in among moviegoers?
It looks like they still are. Star Cinema, after all, has been consistently coming up with movies featuring love teams in the tradition of yesteryear's. Rogelio dela Rosa and Carmen Rosales, Luis Gonzales and Gloria Romero, Susan Roces and Eddie Gutierrez. They were the love teams to reckon with in their time.
Star Cinema is the only movie firm which, to date, has not joined the bold trend. Instead, they have successfully experimented by teaming up even unlikely partners, such as Aga Muhlach and Sharon Cuneta in "Kung Ako Na Lang Sana"; Aga with Claudine Barretto in "Kailangan Kita"; Aga and Kristine in "All My Life"; Claudine and Piolo Pascual (who is better known as the ka-love team of Judy Ann Santos) in "Milan"; and Ai Ai de las Alas with Edu Manzano, Tonton Gutierrez and Jestoni Alarcon in "Ang Tanging Ina." All these movies were blockbusters.
Now Star Cinema is fielding the young love team of John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo in "Now That I Have You." John and Bea were discovered for their kakaibang chemistry in the teleserye, "Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay," which also starred Lorna Tolentino, John Estrada and Rica Peralejo, among others. The teleseye ran for almost a year on ABS-CBN.
Related Laurenti Dyogi, who is the director of "Now That I Have You" and who was "instrumental" to the "discovery" of John Lloyd and Bea as a love team: "Noong nagsisimula pa lamang ang 'Kay Tagal...,' walang gaanong nakapansin kay Bea, who was cast as the younger sister of Rica. Mas naka-focus ang atensiyon ng lahat kina Lorna at John Lloyd, who played mother and son.
"Kaya nasorpresa kami sa naging reaction ng mga televiewers sa kanilang eksenang magkasama. In no time, they were clamoring for more scenes involving them. Kinailangan tuloy na habaan ang role ni Bea, who was originally playing an 'introducing' role in the teleserye."
The strength of the John Lloyd and Bea team-up, however, became more evident after the release of their first movie team-up, "My First Romance," which was a twinbill starring Heart Evangelista and John Prats. This also led to the ABS-CBN management's decision to team up John and Bea in their own soap, "It Might Be You," which is doing very well at the ratings game.
Direk Dyogi said that the two appeared uncomfortable working with each other in the beginning. Both would stay in their respective corners after a take when they were still doing "Kay Tagal Kong Hinintay." "Pero, dito sa 'Now That I Have You,' iba na ang pakiramdam kong relasyong namamagitan sa kanila. Parang more at home na sila sa isa't isa. 'Di lang sila madalas mag-usap, nagbibiruan na rin," he said.
Does he think the two will eventually fall in love?
"Huwag nating madaliin ang dalawa. Bagama't officially ay wala na sina John Lloyd at Ciara (Sotto), it looks like he wants to be free of any commitment muna. In the case of Bea naman, napakabata pa niya para ma-in love. The girl is only 16," Direk Dyogi answered.
